Position Overview

The Department of Geomatics Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 9 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This is a research project in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning with a main goal to identify areas of troublesome knowledge and threshold concepts in several undergraduate courses in the Department of Geomatics Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering and understand whether and how the current teaching and learning methods facilitate deep learning in these areas and concepts. This task will be tackled by making student learning and knowledge retention more visible. Two second-year and two third-year courses are included in this study. The research methodology will combine direct and indirect methods of collecting evidence of student learning. It will include in-class observations of teacher-students interactions, minute papers, end-of-term surveys, think-aloud individual and group sessions, student reflections on learning goals, and sets of exam scores and final grades.

The research assistant will pay a key role in all administrative and research activities, will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and will also interact with the project collaborators. In particular, the research assistant will be responsible for collecting student consent forms, communicating with students participating in the study, administering surveys, performing and summarizing observations of teacher-students interactions, conducting and documenting think-aloud sessions, creating and maintaining master sheets with participants names, and anonymizing samples of student work. In addition to administrative work, the research assistant will participate in ongoing research activities, will provide input on conference presentations and journal manuscripts and will prepare and submit documentation required by the project collaborators and funding agency.

The part time employee will be a 0.4 FTE and work approximately 14 hour per week.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Distributes and collects consent forms from students prepared by the project investigator
  • Communicates with the students participating in the project and the principal investigator in person and through emails whenever an ethics issue arises
  • Creates and maintains a master list with participants' names, anonymizes collected samples of student work and provides the anonymized samples to the principal investigator and project collaborators for analysis
  • Anonymizes marks of term work and final grades and provides them to the project investigator and collaborators
  • Approaches students when the need for think-aloud sessions arises, distributes and collects consent forms from the students, organizes, observes and documents the sessions by means of audio-recordings and observation protocols
  • Prepares and provides transcriptions of the recorded session to the participating students
  • Receives and addresses the feedback from the students in the observation protocols and transcripts. Provides the observation protocols and transcripts to the principal investigator and collaborators
  • Conducts classroom observations, writes observation protocols and discusses findings with the project collaborators
  • Distributes, collects and participates in the analysis of end-of-term surveys
  • Participates in meetings with the project collaborators and reports to the principal investigator
  • Provides input on written project documents, protocols, draft journal manuscripts, conference presentations and papers and presents them at conferences
  • Assists the project principal investigator and collaborators in preparing and organizing workshops in the Department of Geomatics Engineering

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in Education preferred
  • 1 to 3 years of related technical experience with the research specialty field
  • Recommend change to processes or procedures
  • Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
  • Must be open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills and an ability to exercise judgement within established guidelines
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • A positive attitude and ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Must have a basic competency in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning with a minimum of one year of postgraduate training
  • Core knowledge of the ethics of research involving humans
  • Must obtain a TCPS 2: Core certification in the first month of the appointment
