Position Overview

The Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Science invites applications for two (2) Research Associate(s). This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 2-3 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigators, the Research Associate will work in the Interactions Lab (iLab) at the University of Calgary, and assist with areas of information visualization, design, and human-computer interaction. The successful candidate will perform tasks of moderate complexity under general supervision and with informal coaching and training from others.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assist with visualization details on energy sources by sector for the NEBs Energy Futures report
  • Help to visualize infrastructure mapping data (e.g., pipelines and above-ground infrastructure such as pump stations)
  • Scripting and data wrangling
  • Assist with qualitative studies (interviewing stakeholders, transcribing and analyzing data)
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Familiar with information visualization and visualization design
  • Experience with the Adobe Design Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Premier Pro
  • Experience designing websites using HTML, Javascript and CSS
  • Experience sketching, prototyping, and performing iterative design work
  • Experience designing web-based applications and using visualization packages for the web (including d3.js) is an asset
