Position Overview

The ACHIEVE Research Team in the Division of Infectious Disease at the Alberta Children's Hospital in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

Work period will be Monday to Friday approximately 0830-1630. Peak periods will be when preparing for upcoming studies and prior to and during flu season.   The successful candidate will need to demonstrate strong communication, analytical and, above all, organizational skills as well as exercise judgment within established research guidelines.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Ethics:

  • Prepare and submit application for scientific, administrative and ethics approval using the IRISS system, including:
    • Cover letter
    • Application checklist
    • Application
    • Other forms as necessary for individual studies

Coordinate Clinic Appointments:

  • Phone and email communication with parents of research subjects re appointment times
  • Liaise with staff and family re: scheduled time

Data Entry:

  • Compile and organize data, statistics and other information to support research activities
  • Chart Preparation for Research Projects
  • Study recruitment

Data Entry:

  • Prepare, edit, and proofread correspondence, invoices, presentations, , reports, and related documents
  • Organize and coordinate all activities related to the faculty members administrative, research, teaching and clinical requirements
  • Deal with shifting priorities ensuring all information is produced within deadlines in a professional, accurate manner
  • Draft routine correspondence and type, edit and proof-read general correspondence, administrative and teaching material, , and other related documents from /typed drafts, using various computer software programs
  • Schedule appointments, meetings, seminars, which may require room bookings, setting up food requirements, preparing agendas, taking and transcribing minutes, preparing and distributing notices
  • Provide effective and professional assistance to visitor, faculty and staff inquiries in a courteous, timely and professional manner, demonstrating friendly, complete, competent customer service and support at all times in all situations

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University or college degree in a health sciences related field, preferred
  • Minimum 1 - 3 years of related administrative experience
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Administrative and research experience essential
  • Previous GCP training an asset
  • Good telephone manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with colleagues, children and lay public
  • Takes direction well and has a strong focus on teamwork
  • Experience in a clinical research setting an asset
  • Excellent multitasking skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs
  • Internet skills
  • Highly organized, ability to work independently, with the ability to manage deadlines and function well under pressure
  • Previous experience in a medical/clinical setting, as well as medical terminology would be an asset
  • High level of understanding and capability of office administrative practices
  • Ability to retain knowledge of a variety of informational resources and requirements
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills
