Position Overview

The Nursing Research Office in the Faculty of Nursing is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Research Facilitator.

The Research Facilitator reports directly to the Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Nursing. This position works closely with and has day-to-day collaboration and accountability to the Associate Dean (Research), and also maintains a close working relationship with Faculty of Nursing Researchers and their Research Staff and Graduate Students, the Nursing Research Office team and others within the Faculty of Nursing and the University of Calgary.

The work involves administrative and editorial assistance to support researchers in the Faculty of Nursing, and their trainees (i.e., post-doctoral fellows, and graduate and undergraduate students) and research staff to successfully and efficiently manage pre- and post-award administration of research grants and awards. The work requires development and coordination of processes and procedures relating to the operations of the Nursing Research Office, and research activities within the Faculty of Nursing. The job is demanding and requires teamwork and discretion to manage the complex relationships between the Nursing Research Office, Faculty of Nursing, University Research Services Office, nursing researchers, and their trainees and research staff, and others.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Grants and Awards, Ethics, Operational Approvals, and Compliance:

  • Maintains a close working relationship with the University of Calgary, Research Services Office in order to ensure the Faculty of Nursing remains current and contributes to research-related developments, including research management systems
  • Liaises with relevant University units, including Research Accounting, Legal Services, Ethics Boards, and Alberta Health Services Administrative Approvals Office, to facilitate the research process and to ensure compliance with University and Sponsor requirements including timelines and budgets
  • Facilitates the development of grant applications through advice, education, assistance, and information to Faculty of Nursing researchers, and their trainees and research staff in order to stimulate external research grants and awards
  • Facilitates pre- and post-award administration of research grants and awards for Faculty of Nursing researchers, and their trainees and research staff
  • Reviews grant applications for strategic content, accuracy and compliance with University and Sponsor requirements, and required internal approvals
  • Facilitates referrals to the Nursing Research Office staff for statistical consultations, editorial services, data collection, and maintaining faculty curricula vitae for grant and award applications
  • Facilitates ethics applications through provision of advice, education, assistance, and information to Faculty of Nursing researchers, and their trainees and research staff
  • Reviews ethics applications to ensure that ethical standards have been met, and consults with Ethics Board staff, as required
  • Implements, and maintains processes and procedures relating to the operations of the Nursing Research Office, and research activities within the Faculty of Nursing
  • Provides advice to the Associate Dean (Research) regarding research-related issues, and policies and processes
  • Maintains detailed records of research activities within the Faculty of Nursing for use in regular reporting on research metrics, including number of applications submitted and awarded, publications, etc
  • Coordinates special initiatives and manages data collection to inform the development of strategic plans and other initiatives
  • Stays informed about issues, trends and policies, both internal and external, to ensure that research grants and awards meet University and Sponsor requirements
  • Ensures that researchers in the Faculty of Nursing, and their trainees and research staff are informed, in a timely manner, of emerging funding opportunities and changes to funding programs

Reporting and Analyses:

  • Maintains a research sponsorships database that tracks applications (i.e., funding, ethics, and administrative) and award information for reporting and statistical analysis
  • Develops and provides statistical reports required by the Nursing Research Office, Research Accounting, Associate Dean (Research), and Dean
  • Actively participates in detailed analysis of research information and statistics in accordance with financial and accounting regulations, as related to research grants, awards, and funds

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Graduate degree preferred
  • At least 3 years of progressive experience in research and grant development activities including work experience in a University, foundation, or granting agency setting
  • Proficient with information/communication technologies (e.g., web-searches / email / word processing / spreadsheets / database skills and other)
  • Proficient with writing and editing documents, with strong attention to detail
  • Strong leadership, facilitation, organizational, analytic, and client services skills
  • Superior communication and time management skills
  • Discretion and good judgment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
