Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Lab Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator. 

The team is investigating the immunopathogenesis of hepatitis B virus using biological samples from patients, and using the woodchuck hepatitis virus model of hepatitis B. The technician should have knowledge, skills and experience to work in a Level 2 Biosafety laboratory. This position will work both independently and in a team environment. The Lab Technician will contribute to the overall success of the research within the specialized area of hepatitis B virus  (HBV), woodchuck hepatitis virus (WHV) and liver disease.

The technician will perform highly complex and highly analytical functions and will require a  high level of concentration, resourcefulness, and creativity.

This is a regular full-time position with normal work hours, but there may be some flexibility required in start and end times within a day, depending on the nature of the experiments.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for management, maintenance, or control of a specialized area
  • Involved in day-to-day supervision of staff, monitoring, planning, and organizing activities of others
  • Assist with plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services
  • Participate in the design and development of experimental assays and processes and the design and development of precision equipment and processes
  • Recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices within the lab
  • Responsible for presentations in producing figures for publication
  • Produce initial drafts of manuscripts for publication and appropriate scientific journals
  • Based on discussion with the principal investigator, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Oversee reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment for various users, including stocking of all necessary materials and supplies
  • Keep laboratory and work area clean and safe
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus community
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Extensive understanding, continued learning and development of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters Degree with minimum of 3 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderate-to high complex technological systems
  • Ability to supervise and provide technical support for other team members, students and post-doctoral fellows through advice and guidance
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques
  • Must be open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization
  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
  • Experience with various biological and/or infectious samples
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • WHIMS Certification required
  • IATA training required
  • Biosafety Level 2 and Blood Borne Pathogens training required
  • Research / general knowledge about viral hepatitis, animal models of viral hepatitis, molecular biology is an asset
  • The applicant must have good organizational skills, accurate documentation, positive work ethic and ability to work well in a team environment
