Position Overview

The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Project Investigators and the Project Coordinators, the Research Assistant will be responsible for participant recruitment, data collection, and other operational tasks for the:  "A subsidized healthy food prescription program for adults with type 2 diabetes who are experiencing food insecurity (Healthy Food Rx)" study.

The purpose of the Healthy Food Rx study is to improve the health of people with type 2 diabetes and food insecurity by providing them with a subsidy for healthy foods.

The employee must be willing to do occasional travel within Alberta and/or work at data collection sites as required by the project.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Will work closely with members of the research team to:
    • Coordinate and schedule clinic recruitment visits
    • Coordinate and schedule study follow-up including lab and clinic visits
  • Prepare, edit, and proofread study materials
  • Order study supplies and equipment
  • Manage and answer study phone line and study email
  • Screen patients for study eligibility and administer surveys by phone
  • Train patients on how to use food subsidy
  • Use and provide simple maintenance of fax, scanner and photocopier.
  • Responsible for occasional data collection - Physical measurements: weight, height, waist circumference, blood pressure
  • Complete equity-oriented training
  • Assist with data verification and cleaning
  • Assist with additional study tasks as required
  • Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor(s), senior management and with the campus community

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Post-Secondary Certificate/Diploma/Degree
  • Minimum 2 years of related administrative experience/research experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are a necessity
  • Immediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Experience working with REDCap is an asset
  • Previous experience working with patients in a medical/clinical setting is an asset
  • Ability to operate and maintain various office equipment (eg. photocopier, fax machine)
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Must be open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Must have a valid driver's license and a private vehicle for transportation
