Position Overview

The Faculty of Kinesiology invites applications for a Senior Manager, Sales & Marketing. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 36 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Director of Athletics with a dotted line to the Director of Development, the Senior Manager, Sales and Marketing is a key member of the management team for Dinos Athletics and is responsible for revenue generation and overall management of marketing and events.

The flexible work schedule is 35 hours per week, with the peak period of work occurring from September 1 through April 30 each academic year. Weekend and evening work will be required during the athletic season with a high volume of work. The position has full-time, part-time, and casual direct reports, including event staff. This position has access to highly sensitive and confidential information, and the impact of decisions will be Faculty- and University-wide. Diplomacy, tact, discretion, conflict resolution and the ability to manage fluid expectations, projects, and deadlines are key skills required by this role.

Through sponsorship, ticket sales, merchandise, food and beverage, and other revenue-generating opportunities, the Senior Manager, Sales and Marketing sets the stage for positive student and student-athlete experiences by creating an outstanding environment at UCalgary athletics events. By enhancing attendance and providing an entertaining, safe, and respectful in-game atmosphere, this position contributes to the University of Calgary's Eyes High goals through the elevation of the student experience and a constructive contribution to campus culture and community while generating revenue to reinvest in Athletics operations.

The Senior Manager, Sales and Marketing is responsible for the marketing and execution of all exhibition, regular season, playoff and special events conducted by the Department of Athletics, numbering approximately 80-85 per year. The position provides leadership to a significant part-time staff during multi-event weekends, often requiring various detailed tasks to be coordinated simultaneously at multiple venues. At times, there will be multiple, simultaneous deadlines in a work environment that is fast paced, dynamic and results oriented. The incumbent must be able to work under pressure and with a variety of environments and people, including management of a significant number (over 50) of part-time staff.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Revenue Generation 

  • Develop strategies to support long-term, sustainable, stable revenue sources for Athletics through various revenue-generating opportunities, with accountability for annual revenue targets

Sponsorship

  • Develop sponsorship/partnership strategies and solicit support from local, regional, and national businesses and corporations
  • Coordinating with the Development team, manage contractual relationships with partners
  • Oversee servicing and execution of sponsorship agreements with the Athletics marketing and communications team
  • Manage stewardship program for sponsorship including reports, sponsor liaison for events, and other recognition
  • Engage with other units in the Faculty of Kinesiology as well as across the university to develop broader partnerships for mutual benefit

Ticket Sales

  • Develop, execute, and evaluate a ticket sales strategy for the Dinos, leading to year-over-year increases in revenue and attendance
  • Oversee the full implementation and evaluation of ticketing system
  • Ensure that appropriate university and department procedures are followed related to cash handling and PCI compliance while also ensuring proper accounting of revenues (including deposits)

Food and Beverage

  • Manage the Dinos' F&B operations (Edges Concession) in the Jack Simpson Gym and Olympic Oval

Merchandise

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a merchandising strategy for the Dinos, working with partners including the university bookstore to enhance product offerings, make merchandise more widely available
  • Advise the Director of Athletics, coaches, and other staff on other opportunities to generate revenue for individual teams and the athletic department

Marketing & Events Management 

  • Oversee the development, execution, and evaluation of the Dinos' annual marketing plan, supporting revenue generation and increased attendance at events through traditional and new media advertising
  • Ensure the Dinos brand is managed and displayed appropriately at all times, in coordination with the Manager, Communications
  • Develop and manage the annual budget for marketing and events, ensuring proper purchasing procedures and policies are followed at all times
  • Ensure a safe, respectful, and entertaining environment at Dinos events through various promotional activities and a first-class in-game presentation while ensuring all relevant league requirements are met
  • Ensure the Dinos are represented at key campus and community events
  • Negotiate external contracts and lead project management for marketing projects (e.g. graphic design, working with Creative Services); ensure all deliverables are met

People Management

  • Lead a team of unionized full-time, part-time, and student staff in marketing and events including recruitment, training, performance management, and discipline up to and including termination
  • Ensure ongoing professional development opportunities are provided and annual evaluations are completed

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Post-secondary degree in marketing, business, communications/public relations, or other related area (master's degree preferred)
  • Minimum 5-7 years experience in a sponsorship and/or marketing role with demonstrated leadership and management experience
  • Experience in a sport and/or higher education environment would be considered strong assets
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large team of employees and possesses excellent people management skills
  • Demonstrated track record of innovative marketing and revenue generation experience, with the initiative to take advantage of new opportunities
  • Sound financial management experience
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of U SPORTS, Canada West and University of Calgary policies and procedures are essential
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong attention to detail, good multitasking and organizational skills are required
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment focused on excellent customer service
  • Experience managing in a unionized environment would be considered an asset
