Senior Business Intelligence Analyst, BI, Analytics & Integration, Information Technologies

Position Overview

The Business Intelligence, Analytics & Integration team within Information Technologies is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Senior Business Intelligence Analyst for approximately 24 months.

The position reports to the Associate Director, Applications and Business Intelligence & Analytics within the IT Operations portfolio at the University of Calgary.  The position works 35 hours per week, with normal business hours being 08:30 - 16:30, Monday to Friday.  The position is subject to high stress and requires balancing multiple priorities with tight deadlines.  There may be a requirement for after-hours work, depending on the nature of the projects.

The position will be responsible for designing and managing the BI presentation tools and applications environment.  The incumbent will:

  • Configure BI Tools
  • Develop the semantic layer and metadata as well as create reports and dashboards.
  • Develops, manages, and updates data models, including conceptual and logical models of the data warehouse, data mart, and staging area, and may include an operational data store or source system.
  • Responsible for the scripts required to extract, transform, clean and move data and metadata so they can be loaded into a data warehouse, data mart, or operational data store.
  • Test, monitors, manages and validates data warehouse activity including data extraction, transformation, movement, loading, cleansing, and updating processes.
  • Tunes databases for performance, creates capacity plans, and manages data security.
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience and manages medium to low complexity projects.
  • Works with end users and business analysts to ensure tight fit between BI environment and business requirements.
  • Be involved in providing team training as well as end-user training and documentation.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Requirements Gathering

  • Work with Project Managers and IT stakeholders as well as representatives from various faculties/departments on campus to understand business requirements, taking into account architectural goals and strategies
  • Successfully gather and translate business requirements into technical specifications
  • Works with end users, business analysts, and IT related staff to identify and understand source data systems

Project Management 

  • May lead small projects with manageable risks and resource requirements
  • Contributes to the development of project plans, schedules and estimates for BI projects
  • Ensures that solutions development meet client specifications and requirements, and are well tested and documented
  • Assume ownership of the service design process from conception through release to production
  • Ensure all system designs are aligned with the IT's architectural standards and roadmaps
  • Ensure all system designs are delivered in a timely manner, based upon the Project Manager's schedule, and advise when timelines cannot be met


  • Responsible for ensuring all documentation is detailed, accurate, timely, and meets the requirements of the project stakeholders.  These documents may include, but are not limited to:
    • Solution and database design
    • Support documentation, FAQs, known issues, errors
  • Map source system data to data warehouse models
  • Defines metadata and develops processes for capturing and maintaining metadata from all data warehousing components
  • Documents resolution steps and participates in the development of knowledge base articles
  • Develops and manages BI training, documentation and help desk capabilities

Technical Expertise 

  • Contribute to the design process using their own technical expertise and challenge design team members on their technical recommendations where needed and appropriate
  • Creates and implements physical database designs
  • Designs and develops security processes or measures to meet security requirements for reporting solutions
  • Develops and tests extractions, transformation, load (ETL) and security processes
  • Adapts data models and ETL and security processes to accommodate changes in source systems and new business user requirements
  • Creates test cases and conducts quality control activities.
  • Responsible for designing technical solution to address identified business requirements
  • Troubleshoots BI presentation tool problems and tunes for performance
  • Resolves tier 2 support tickets in a timely manner
  • Work with BI Architects and other BI Developers to help any production related issues quickly and effectively
  • Contributes to the development, integration, administration and evolution of the data warehouse
  • Take on responsibility for self-study and learning to remain well-versed in a wide range of technologies and systems

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Diploma or University Degree in Computer Science or similar field
  • Power BI or other DW/BI certifications are preferred
  • 5-7+ years' experience in Business Intelligence or related fields
  • Ability to translate business needs into technical solutions
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and debugging skills
  • Program Delivery Methodology skills including SCRUM and Agile fundamentals is considered an asset
  • Ability to use standard BI and database tools including SSIS, SSAS, and Power BI
  • Understanding of SQL, including MS SQL and Oracle, and relational/multi-dimensional designs
  • Good understanding of the Kimball methodology
  • Strong understanding of Data Warehouse (DW)/BI concepts and principles
  • Strong conceptual, communication and technical skills
  • ITIL Foundations certification is an asset

Desirable Skills include:

  • Exposure or understanding of Dashboards, Scorecards, OLAP, Key Performance Indicators, Data Mining, Corporate Performance Management, Predictive Analytics
  • Experience or exposure to data modelling tools such as Embarcadero, Erwin, Visio
  • Exposure or understanding of ERP data models and processes (e.g. PeopleSoft, SAP, etc)
  • Application development skills with Power Platform (Power Apps, Automate)
  • Ability to learn and use other tools as required (Cognos, Tableau)
