Senior Network Designer, Network Services, Information Technology

Position Overview

Network Services within Information Technologies is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Senior Network Designer.

The Network Design role is responsible for well designed, reliable and scalable network systems. This senior technical position works in a team-based unit to design, and plan the introduction of new services, and integrate the changing needs of the business and of IT.

The position reports to the Manager, Network Services and will provide technical development to the overall network services portfolio - in service of the campus community. This position is engaged upon by both IT; as well as faculty and support staff units through the Technology Services Portfolio to provide technical solutions designs. Those in this role will be required to pull upon their deep technical expertise and analytical skills to provide consultative services; resulting in the development of designs that address complex problems.
As Senior Technicians, members of this team will require no direction in order to fulfill their work. Their work will have long lasting impacts to the overall design and stability of the network environment. This role will also provide feedback into the development and improvement of existing policies, processes, and procedures. High stress will be a factor of this job. Those in this position will be required to maintain their certification for their areas of expertise, and will be expected to provide mentorship to less senior members of the team.
The position works 35 hours per week, with normal business hours being 08:30 - 16:30, Monday to Friday.  The position is subject to high stress and requires balancing multiple priorities with tight deadlines.  There may be a requirement for after-hours work, depending on the nature of the projects.  The position will be responsible for holding team members accountable for project tasks despite not having any direct reports. This position is part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Project Design

  • Assume ownership of the network design process from conception through release to production
  • Ensure all network designs are aligned with the IT’s architectural standards and roadmaps
  • Apply strong technical, communication, and customer service skills while working with the business, IT Systems Design, IT Applications Design, and IT Project teams through a variety of business requirements of varying complexity
  • Produce detailed designs outlining the overall integration of complex solutions into existing network systems
  • Produce high level implementation steps through work breakdown structures so that clarity and accountability can be provided to the technical teams during implementing

Technical Project Management/Oversight 

  • Assign project tasks and oversee that they are actioned upon by the network technicians
  • Apply strong problem solving skills and technical decision making to assist in the resolution of technical problems as they arise in projects
  • Provide quality assurance/quality checks throughout the project lifecycle so that technical teams meet the quality and standards through their delivery of tasks


  • Responsible for ensuring all documentation is detailed, accurate, timely, and meets the requirements of the stakeholders.  These documents may include, but are not limited to:
    • Consolidated design, showing both logical and physical layout
    • Network build request(s)
    • Release documentation
    • Support documentation, known issues, errors
    • Bill of materials
    • Status reporting where applicable

Technical Expertise and Mentorship 

  • Provide mentorship and training to address technical deficiencies and gaps within the technical team
  • Mentorship should address both short term and long term deficiencies
    • Short term  related to project tasks – ie addressing gaps that may result in project delays or risks to the stability of the system
    • Long term related to roadmap and strategic goals - ie adoption of new technologies
  • Provide feedback towards the creation or modifications of policies, processes, and procedures within the Network Services team
  • Engage with vendors to stay on top of changes in vendor technologies
  • Provide recommendations and feedback to the Network Specialist team related to technology changes and improvements

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or diploma equivalent
  • CCNA and CCNP
  • Palo Alto ACE or Fortinet NSE 3 is an asset
  • 10-15 years of directly relevant experience in a highly complex network environment
  • Expert level knowledge of routing and routing protocols including MPLS and VXLAN
  • Expert level knowledge of IP, TCP, and UDP
  • Expert level knowledge and experience of Ethernet and related technologies
  • Experience with scripting languages and network monitoring and testing tools
  • Working knowledge and experience with Unix and Unix like operating systems
  • Experience configuring and working with various VOIP devices and protocols
  • Experience configuring and working with various CLI device operating systems
