Position Overview

The Office of the Associate Dean in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for two (2) Intermediate Programmer Analyst(s). This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Manager.

The CHGI bioinformatics team provides sequencing project design, quality control, statistical analysis, public repository submission, and biological interpretation services (linking new results to known results in the literature) to users of the Cumming School of Medicine's core CHGI sequencing facility.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

• Provide support in the following areas depending on whether the incumbent's experience is more programming or biology focused
• Development, testing, and implementation of application programs
• Maintenance, testing and implementation of application programs
• Assisting users in submitting their results to suitable public repositories prior to publication of results
• Genotyping and gene expression analysis in Mendelian disease and cancer contexts (both human and animal model systems)
• Interpreting results from emerging single cell sequencing technologies
• Finding and cataloging relevant literature for the interpretation of sequencing results, using existing commercial support software (Ingenuity Pathway Analysis) and in-house developed systems
• Delivering results on time and on budget while ensuring that task priorities are understood. A ticketing system for tasks is used to coordinate CHGI bioinformaticians efforts, and tasks may be billed at an hourly rate to clients.

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Completed a post-secondary degree in Computer Science, Biological Sciences or other related fields
• Specific areas of expertise may include the following
  • Familiarity with genomics, transcriptomics, and epigenetics data processing
  • Experience in statistical analysis and scientific results writing
  • Working knowledge of the Linux command line
  • Working knowledge of programming languages including R, Python, and shell scripting
  • Experience deploying workflows on compute clusters
• Ability to effectively communicate with clients and with all levels of CHGI staff
• Demonstrated aptitude for independent learning, and desire to stay abreast of developments in genomic technologies and biological/bioinformatics literature
