Position Overview

The Department of CSM Grants in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Research Grants Development Officer for approximately 3 years.

Will report to the Manager, Grant Development.

The Research Grants Development Officer (GDO) provides leadership to support external research grants across all four pillars of health research. This position is responsible for effectively planning, managing, and communicating requirements for the submission of US Government funding, primarily to the NIH. To contribute to the development of highly competitive funding proposals this position will actively facilitate collaboration between the GDO and other University offices involved. 

This position is complex in nature and requires the ability to manage multiple, often competing, deadlines. The incumbent must deal with diverse stakeholders, including over 550 full time and 2700 clinical/adjunct faculty members across 20 academic departments, 7 Research Institutes, University administrators, external partners, and research funding agencies. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Strategic Development of Applications

  • Provides leadership in providing strategic development of grant proposals for faculty research

  • Coordinates with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely and appropriate communication and support

  • Provide editorial and criteria review to ensure research is communicated effectively in line with University and funding agency policy/guidelines

  • Managing Internal Peer Review for competitions within profile 

  • Educates researchers with regard to timelines and procedures related to the grant submission process

  • Liaises with external agencies (and partner universities) during the grant development and submission process and with other units in Research Services and CSM Legal as necessary

Communication

  • Ensure research community is appropriately informed, in a timely manner of emerging opportunities, program changes and requirements

  • Work in concert with the Research Services Office to coordinate research grant submissions in line with University of Calgary policies and procedures (i.e. internal approvals)

  • Keeps up to date on funding opportunities in what is a complex and rapidly changing environment

  • Recognize and protect sensitive information contained in grant proposals, including confidential research plans, intellectual property, and faculty, staff and graduate student salary details

  • Recognize the impact of mishandling such information in terms of liability, potential loss of research funding and reputational damage to CSM and the University of Calgary

  • Develops and maintains long-term, trustworthy and productive working relationships with all stakeholders, including University faculty members, University departments, and external sponsors

Program Development

  • Develops expert knowledge in US granting regulatory requirements and associated legislation

  • Acts as information resource on University policies to both internal and external stakeholders for pre-award stage 

  • Understands, interprets, and helps faculty members comply with policies and procedures for a wide array of government grant programs

  • Develops a suite of resources and tools for those applying to US Government funding, with an initial focus on applications for NIH

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree, required. Postgraduate training in a health research domain is an asset 
  • Minimum of 3-5 years related experience in Research and Development, in building collaborative research teams and multi-disciplinary and/or multi-institutional research proposals 
  • Training in grant writing/development necessary 
  • Experience with US grant funding mechanisms would be considered an asset
  • Those with strong knowledge of the UofC research landscape, including research administrative units, given priority
  • Proven mastery of English grammar, excellent oral/written communication is required
  • Ability to provide effective presentations is necessary
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
  • Ability to deconstruct program guidelines into clear descriptions of actions and essential steps for faculty
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, act decisively and to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgment on a wide range of issues, using discretion and maintaining confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and within a team, and adapt to multiple competing priorities to develop new initiatives and program directions as needed
  • A combination of education, training and experience may be considered
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
